There are banks that have an influence on which genes parents can choose, but there are some that do not decide. The opposition says that donor banks who commonly choose for the parent is just another option for the individual choosing genes. Bleyer gives an explanation on the argument by saying, “Donor selection remained the exclusive province of physicians, who tended to make choices based on rough physical resemblance to the infertile males they were working with-dark-haired Caucasians to dark-haired Caucasians” (Bleyer par. 16). She makes a thorough example because there are parents who do not want the banks to choose, while there are other parents who want their donor conception kid to look similar to them. If one would not be able to choose, the opposite party would be upset and same for the other way around. For people who want to choose they will use this process and will need to research based on if they would like to pick their kids genes or not.
Many donation banks cause discrimination against parents wanting to mix ethnicities. Some banks do not allow parents the choice of mixing ethnicities. Those parents can choose to go to a different donor bank but there is the inconvenience that not all banks have the option to choose mixing ethnicities. Jessica Barrett, a writer from the Calgary Herald wrote about an interviewee who said her doctor told her she could only receive sperm from a donor who was “like her,” meaning white (Barrett par. 1). It is not acceptable for the donor banks to choose, because if a person receiving the donor sperm or eggs was able to have kids on their own they would choose the partner themselves. Another argument is certain banks turn individuals away specifically. Bleyer says, “Today, with lesbian couples and single women making up 70 percent of its clientele, open-identity donors are a third of the bank’s catalog” (Bleyer par. 44). It is hard to tell a homosexual couple they cannot get sperm or eggs when they are the biggest contribution to the banks. There are certain banks who decline same sex marriages and non-traditional families to try to control the family make up. Those unfamiliar with this school of thought may be interested to know it constitutes if the donor banks want to stay open they are going to have to start providing their main source of income with what those people want. The solution should be every donor bank having the option give the parents a choice of either choosing genes or not, instead of having different rules for different banks.
